Run Your Own Wormery

Benefits of a Wormery
When people find out that I run a wormery under my kitchen sink, they look at me a little funny. You know that look – like why on earth would you ever want to run a worm farm in your home? Well, for starters, owning your own wormery is an excellent way to start improving the environment at home. Wormeries are great for turning all that kitchen waste that we normally just toss out with the trash into valuable compost for your garden or yard.
There are many reasons that people build a wormery, and composting is only one. Worms from your bin are excellent bait for fishing. When your worms breed enough and begin to multiply, you can even begin adding more worms to your garden. Earth worms are great for your yard and garden as they are nature’s answer to the question of how to properly aerate, fertilize, and till the soil. Unfortunately many of the harsh chemicals used in lawns and gardens kill off the worms that keep the soil healthy. Adding worms from your wormery will work to keep your soil and garden at their peak. Lastly many people build their own wormery to profit from worm farming by selling worms to fisherman and other budding worm farmers.
What is a Wormery?
There are numerous different sizes and types of wormeries. You can buy a wormery to use indoors or outdoors in virtually any size. The larger ones tend to be more suitable for outdoors or basement use, however depending on the weather in your area you may prefer an indoor wormery.
A wormery is all about vermicomposting as well as worm breeding. Vermicomposting is a great way to recycle kitchen scraps into something that you can use at home. Worm castings are an excellent source of natural fertilization for your garden or lawn. The largest benefit of having a wormery over a compost heap is that worms cut down on the time that it takes to crate valuable compost for your yard.
A wormery functions by creating the right environment for worms to thrive in. Using the correct types of soil or bedding, the right types of food, and correct amounts of water are all important factors to consider when designing a wormery. Without the proper balance, the worms will not thrive.
Why You Need a Wormery
No matter whether you live in a house or an apartment, a wormery is an excellent source of compost for your garden. They are especially appropriate for apartment dwellers who are otherwise not able to maintain an appropriate compost heap or who may not have space for a compost tumbler. Wormeries provide the ability to recycle even more of your waste in your own home while providing a valuable resource in the form of worm castings.
Getting Started with Wormeries
When you are getting started with a wormery, you have many options available. You can choose to purchase a worm farm kit – a premade system that basically helps insure the proper balance of elements that worms need to thrive. When you are just getting started with vermiculture, one of these kits is an excellent investment to get off on the right foot.
Building your own wormery is a little more time consuming but can be rewarding for the do-it-yourselfer. Simple wormeries are fairly easy to construct from everyday materials using tools that most homeowners have around the house. Wormeries that you build yourself are excellent for placing under the kitchen sink and are also a great size for the apartment composter.
Whether you decide to build or purchase your wormery, it will continue to provide value to you for years to come. You don’t need to be a professional to be able to raise worms at home. There are excellent resources available to teach you everything you need to know to be successful with worm farming at home.
